Justice Malala’s Wry Reaction to the ANC Leadership’s Criticism of Nkandla

Let Them Eat CakeJustice Malala, author of Let Them Eat Cake, has written a tongue-in-cheek review of a sushi restaurant, that also questions the ANC’s reaction to public protector Thuli Madonsela’s Nkandla report.

Malala points out presidency minister Trevor Manuel’s response to the report on President Jacob Zuma’s homestead, in which he said: “Taxpayers should not pay for a swimming pool at any individual’s house, regardless [of] who they are.” Following him, former intelligence minister Ronnie Kasrils and Pallo Jordan both came out in criticism of Nkandla. Malala says the reaction from these ANC leaders gave him “a little rumble in my tummy”, and he proceeds with a description of a meal he has at Sushi Box in Newlands:

The sashimi was fresh, the portions generous and the presentation great. My daughter absolutely loved the prawn tempura. My lovely wife and I experimented with a few of the place’s innovations on the sushi front: the pampam roll (prawn tempura and avo roll) and some other creations. We agreed that California’s influence on sushi is regrettable. Mayonnaise just isn’t supposed to be part of sushi. It’s a nice place, Sushi Box. It just needs a bit of tweaking here and there and of course a liquor licence. The prices were reasonable. Nowhere near Nkandla prices.
