Justice Malala Believes Eastern Cape has a Prosperous Future
Justice Malala, author of Let Them Eat Cake, believes Eastern Cape is on the right track when it comes to sound economic development.
In a recent column for The Daily Dispatch, Malala laments South Africa’s “anaemic” GDP growth and unemployment, and admits that “business sentiment is poor”. However, on a recent trip to Eastern Cape, Malala was struck by the province’s attempts to overcome its economic shortcomings.
According to Malala, because of a lack of natural mineral resources and the decline of the mining industry, Eastern Cape has been forced to build a new economic model, encouraging the manufacturing industry to take up in the province. Despite a slow start, incentives such as low tax rates are finally attracting serious investors.
The truth is that Eastern Cape is trying to build an economy that creates jobs without hinging on mineral resources.
Manufacturing is what Africa’s economies are lacking. They depend too much, perhaps solely, on extractive industries. But what happens when the oil dries up, when the platinum runs out?
