Justice Malala Criticises Empty Freedom Day Celebrations
In his latest Times LIVE column, Justice Malala wrote a letter to South Africa about the recent Freedom Day festivities, remarking how South Africans were so busy congratulating themselves on the 19th anniversary of the country’s first democratic election that they were oblivious to the fact that a large chunk of their freedom had just been stolen with the Protection of State Information Bill being passed by Parliament:
Dear South Africa
Isn’t it great? You are a 19-year-old democracy. Great big party you had at the Union Buildings on Saturday. President Jacob Zuma had a few nice words to say.
Across the Twittersphere and other social networks the self-congratulations abounded. We were all so proud, so happy, to be who we are after 19 years of democracy. The opposition parties joined in with their own rallies.
